The Provincial Council promotes astronomical observation in the province as a tourism product

Prodestur, the tourism area of the Diputación de Segovia, continues working to detect new business opportunities that encourage the arrival of tourists to the province. After the study carried out last year analyzing the most suitable products for tourism development in the province of Segovia, the tourism department has focused on stargazing, considering that this resource can be beneficial to encourage overnight stays in the province.
To develop this project, the first thing that has been done has been to analyze the Segovian firmament and begin with the two most favorable areas of the province for having better sky quality, that is, less light pollution, according to the experts consulted. The selected areas are the Sierra de Ayllón and the Sierra Norte de Guadarrama Natural Park - Sabinares de Somosierra.
To provide more details about the possibilities of this resource and its potential, the provincial institution through Prodestur has organized this morning in the Casa del Sello an informative and open training session aimed at tourism entrepreneurs.
During this meeting, which was inaugurated by the President of the Provincial Council, Francisco Vázquez, the scientific, cultural, environmental and economic value of the starry sky of the province of Segovia was analyzed. We have also talked about the activities and specific marketing of the product, how to create employment through the training of specialized personnel, the quality of the sky and its astroturistic potential. Likewise, a specific case of exploitation that already exists in our province has been presented.
The day has the collaboration of the Starlight Foundation an entity, created by the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC), whose main purpose is the dissemination of astronomy and the promotion, coordination and management of the Starlight movement. For this purpose, it develops activities and offers various products and services related to this subject.
The intention is that this day provide new ideas of development for each establishment and each location. A safe and sustainable development of the whole area, respectful of the environment and the environment.
As speakers, Luis Martínez, director of the Starlight Foundation, spoke about the scientific, cultural, environmental and economic value of the starry sky; Maribel Aguilar, astroturistic development technician, who has lectured on the tourism of the stars: product, activities and specific commercialization; Susana Malón, expert in intelligent lighting, has exposed the characteristics of the Segovian sky with a study of its quality and astroturistic potential. Finally, Juan José García, from the Hespérides Astronomical Association, has told an example of the astronomical activity in Segovia in the case of El Espinar.
This training aims to introduce attendees into the world of astrotourism and train them to carry out activities related to the exploitation of this resource, giving basic and fundamental notions of astronomy, as well as guidelines for the development of tourism of the stars in area.
The objective is that, with the collaboration of accommodations, companies and locations, Starlight complete destinations can be certified. The Foundation is responsible for verifying that the destination is suitable to be considered as such. Entering this quality mark of the sky tries to guarantee the arrival of new clients, both from Spain and abroad moved by this type of astronomical observation references.
From Prodestur, eight companies will be selected for the initial development of the project. This year, the selected companies will not have to pay the enrollment in Starlight, because the project assumes this expense. To maintain accreditation in future years, certified companies interested in following in Starlight must assume the annual fee, which cost is variable, depending on the capacity of each accommodation.
