The Mudéjar

The Mudéjar

The town of Cuéllar is defined as having a medieval ensemble in which stands out its civil and religious Mudejar architecture that has been preserved since the 12th and 13th century and that even today these monuments are still used for religious, cultural or private purposes, and their Walls with important Mudejar remains are an important tourist resource.

The Mudéjar Art Center

Next to the Castle is the Church of San Martín. It was declared a National Artistic Monument in 1931 and is one of the best examples of Mudejar architecture in the town of Cuéllar. It has three naves, the central one more wide and high, separated by pillars and covers of brick with arcs fajones, with the central apse, with oven vault, bigger than the lateral ones. On the outside, the apses are decorated with double blind arches doubled, being the upper arquitrabada. The tower is independent and is located at the foot of the temple, next to the triple access door.

It was disentailed in the mid-nineteenth century, remaining in private hands and in ruinous state until it was bought by the City Council and restored in the eighties of the last century. Nowadays it is used as a Mudéjar Art Interpretation Center, which tries to show through an audiovisual show the symbolism of the most genuine art of Cuéllar, immersed within the characteristics of medieval Spain. In this church of San Martín you can appreciate a new way of accessing the knowledge of art, architecture, its people, its buffs, its religion ..., trying to enhance the sense of the church as a space in itself, with the desire to introduce the visitor to the whole of Mudejar art through sounds, lights, music and image. Using emotion and reason as a method of travel to arrive through time until the 12th and 13th centuries, where Mudejar is both an art, a constructive system and a way of life that develops with the Christian, Muslim and Jewish populations, in that world of coexistence of the three religions.
