In Cuéllar you can enjoy different parties such as the child of the Bola, Los Encierros de Cuéllar etc ...

The Child of the Ball

This is a holiday that is celebrated on New Year's Day, or as it is known in Cuellar, Children's Day, organized by the Brotherhood of the Child of the Ball. The party is also repeated on the day of the Kings. Before the procession, a novena was celebrated in the church of San Esteban, from where the procession began.

Currently leaves the Church of San Miguel and is collected in San Esteban. A group of twelve dancers accompanies the procession, dressed in a very colorful costume that belonged to the brotherhood of the Virgen de las Candelas, recovered today and to which only marriages can belong. This suit is from the 18th century and is made up of a wide jacket and short shorts, in a blackcurrant damask fabric, laces and knee-length pink wool socks adorned with bows. The dress is completed with low lace-up boots, a wide-brimmed hat in a cloth and rosettes on the sleeves and on the back. They dance with castanets and to the sound of the dulzaina and the tamboril. It can be said that this is a popular procession in which the faithful accompany these dancers dancing the jota.

Celebrations of the Encierros

The Encierros de Cuéllar presume to be the oldest in Spain. This statement is not made for free, because already in 1215, being bishop of Segovia Geraldo, a synod was held since the episcopate had problems with the laity and ecclesiastics of some circumscriptions of the diocese, specifically with that of Cuéllar, Coca, Sepúlveda and Pedraza. The synod dictates a series of articles that regulate the life and behavior of the clergy; in particular the fifth article prohibits clerics from playing dice and attending "bullfighting games", and if they did, they would be suspended from their ministry. Already in the fourteenth century, Queen Leonor, wife of Juan I of Castile, Aragonese infanta by his birth, is Mrs. Cuéllar and complain to the hidalgos and pecheros of the town, and responding to these complaints that speaks is customary immemorial enclose bulls in Cuéllar.

Subsequently, Beltrán de la Cueva, I Duke of Alburquerque, ratifies this ruling in all its points. In the Historical Archive of Cuéllar documents from 1405 that refer to celebrations with bulls are preserved. In addition to the Regimental Agreements, which already in 1484 order the payment of bulls to two different people, since that year references to bulls are constant in these Agreements, especially to pay the festivities of San Juan and Corpus, although it is also they ran bulls for special events, such as the birth of an heir of the House of Alburquerque or the visit to the Villa of these gentlemen, as well as for the celebration of the end of some epidemic.

The Cuellar festivities begin on the last Saturday of August with the proclamation in the Plaza Mayor and end the following Thursday at night with the fireworks. Five run-ins from Sunday to Thursday begin their journey to the 8: 30 hours with the release in the pens near the river Cega to enter the urban route from the 9: 30 hours.

The Drops

With the first lights of the day the cuellaranos run hurriedly towards the corrals, it is not long and you have to take a good place to see "La Suelta". Here the confinement begins and nobody wants to miss it. People on horseback and on foot meet in the corrals of the Segoviano bridge of the Cega River, at 3 Km. De Cuéllar, to vibrate with this moment. They are the 8: 00, the moment is approaching, the nervous people pound on the door while others seek refuge in the open field, the riders wait, until finally the doors open ... fear, adrenaline, passion, bulls emerge they leave the corral in stampede, there is great confusion ..., it is the moment of the horsemen, who have to control the herd to drive it to the village. Sometimes a bull manages to escape from the riders, people try to find refuge, there are scares, mishaps, some catching ... until finally the riders return to control the situation. Despite the danger, nobody wants to miss "La Suelta", since it is precisely this that makes it one of the most special moments of Cuellar's confinement.

Tour of the countryside

Now begins the pilgrimage of the courtship of the bulls on the mantle of pine forests. In perfect harmony, bull and horse merge together with the beauty of the landscape, following the steps of the Queen's Glen, where a unique walk takes place along pine forests, riverbanks, stubble fields and cultivated fields. their instinct for freedom, they will try to flee, which they sometimes achieve, and where the courage of the horse experts will be demonstrated who will work without pause to keep the herd together until the end of the confinement. Dangerous without doubt is the passage of the herd by the mill of "El Botiller", where it passes from the pine forest to the open field. The chronicles and the medieval documents tell that since the end of the 15th century (towards 1490) it was customary to "enclose bulls" through "loaves and vineyards". A custom that lasts today with all its strength and beauty, enjoying a huge popular roots. Gently the bulls are driven through the newly harvested fields of labor in search of "El Descansadero" in the stubble of the Hontanillas, where the herd rests and the horsemen replenish their strengths with a glass of anise and a sweet.

It is the calm that precedes the storm, since moments later, on the edge of the 9: 30 the riders will guide the young bulls to "the Funnel", union of the route through the countryside with the urban route, where the first races take place. The last trots of horses are heard. Already looms the silhouette of bulls and horses on the top of the hill. The poles point to the sky in a challenging way waiting for the right moment. First silence and expectation, then impatience and finally screaming when seeing the figure of the bulls descending in mad race by the way of "El Ferrero". In the difficult task of introducing the bulls for the talanqueras, the riders squeeze the bulls in a fast race down the hill, controlling in turn that none of them deviate fulfilling their mission of driving the bulls to the urban center. The moment arrives for the runners who impatiently await the arrival of the confinement to be able to carry out their careers, it is the urban route.

Urban route

Nervousness, waiting, tension ... all expectant to see the first races, the first antler ... to enjoy the encierro. People wait impatiently having fun with the Rueda Dance that develops to the sound of dulzaina and tamboril for the tour of the encierro; While,…. At another point along the route, Uncle Ratón's liquor and some pastas help to tone the body in the cool morning. The 9 are approaching: 30 h., The runners are getting ready, the nervousness is growing, all are already prepared and attentive while the participants of the wheel dance make the amaguillos, simulating the arrival of the encierro, which causes the first tensions.

We already have them here !!! Suddenly, at the end of the street begins to see movement, faster and faster, and suddenly, the herd appears with the bulls, the races, the scares, the excitement ...

The crowd gives way to the runners, to the uproar, to the shouting, to the races; the restlessness of the wait is transformed into a multitude of sensations, deceiving the bull, not tripping, leaving the air, the noise of the herd, the shouting of the people, the excitement ... the herd approaches, we must press the race for, a once overcome by the bulls, stand aside and leave other runners, other races, the bulls have passed but the closure continues. Everything lasts only a few seconds, the confinement has passed like a sigh, a moment of magic, which is well worth the wait of a whole year. The Funnel, the Resin, the Cars, the Vineyards, the Walks ... the confinement continues provoking excitement and screaming, fear and satisfaction, for once all the races are done and all you remove ends in the Bullring. Cuéllar neighbors and strangers participate in each confinement, live as main protagonists, suffering and enjoying each race, each stumble, each attack, each catch as if they were themselves. Once everything has finished, the groups are formed where the races are commented, the mishaps, the sensations, all have something to contribute to the conversation since each race is different and each one lives it in a different way.

Sometimes a bull remains, which in addition to increasing the dangerousness of the enclosure also increases the excitement and fun of both the runners and the spectators. Rare is the year in which the waiters do not put a steer in the old post office building, which makes the section of the cars one of the most exciting along with that of the Parras. Remove after remove, the bull is driven to the square but not before causing numerous situations of danger in which sometimes the boys are in difficulty to get out.

Pilgrimage of the Henar

The Shrine of Our Lady of Henar, located about five kilometers from Cuéllar to the northwest, is the most important center of devotion in the whole region. It is celebrated on the Sunday before San Mateo, between the 14 and the 20 in September. The image of Our Lady of El Henar is a carving of the twelfth century, which is venerated since its appearance to a pastor there by 1580. In the precincts of the Sanctuary is the Fuente del Cirio, a place where, according to tradition, the image was hidden from the Almohad invasion until the date of its appearance.

The path to the sanctuary is a feast for pilgrims who go to the pilgrimage, it being almost a tradition to drink water from the "Fuente del Cirio", and even fill a pitcher with it. In this pilgrimage moments of great religiosity and emotion are experienced, especially in the departure of the Virgin in procession through the meadow that surrounds the Sanctuary, as well as in the song of the salve before the image.

But besides its religious sense, the Sanctuary of the Henar presents a great attraction from the environmental point of view, since it is located in a wooded meadow, very propitious to enjoy the countryside.
