In the year 1641 Cantalejo became Villa de Señorío with Don Fernando de Ojeda y Treviño. King Alfonso XIII gave the title of city in the year 1926.
Cantalejo is one of the most populated villages of the province of Segovia, is located between land of pine forests and cereals, at a distance of 50 km from the Segovian capital, 90 km from Valladolid and 131 km from Madrid. It is a prosperous city, where converge, nature and industry, with an important evolution in the provision of services, which has made it an important regional center, a driving force in the area.
The Trillo, fundamental piece of the cantalejana culture
Cantalejo was for many years important for the manufacture of threshing wheels and screens. It is not possible to date the beginning of the manufacture of these farm implements although it is possible that these and other implements were made in this municipality since its Romanization, motivated by the abundant raw material offered by the forests of this place.
The Cantabrian trillo descends from the Roman trillo and has been for centuries an essential farming implement whose manufacture occupied the autumn and winter months and the market search began in April and May.
Although currently threshing machines are used, the processing of threshing in Cantalejo remains in force. There is a growing demand for these tools, which is motivated by its decorative and artisanal value.
La Gacería, an important part of local folklore
Cantalejo's scouts and livestock dealers in their movements through towns and cities of Castile and other parts of Spain, used to make their deals an artificial linguistic code, slang or jargon, a very small lexicon that served to communicate with each other .
The gestation of the galera should not have been much later than the commercialization of the threshing machines, screens and other tools manufactured in Cantalejo, it must have been in full bloom during the second quarter of s. XX at the same time that the corresponding work activities prospered. Once the threshing industry and the sale of livestock as a hobby disappeared, this particular code ceased to be used.
The galery was a very small communication code. Summing up all the variants even the smallest ones, it has been possible to include a little more than three hundred and a quarter of terms, a quarantine of verbs, a fortnight of adjectives and several adverbs. All other simple or complex nouns.
Temple that is to 3 km of the population. With an apse of Romanesque style, it was the seat of the Knights of the Temple. It holds pilgrimages every year.
Church of San Andrés
It is a neoclassical temple that was built in the s. XVI. Structured in three main naves, it has a sumptuous altarpiece with marble columns.
Lagoons of Cantalejo
They are located in the northern center of the province of Segovia, in an area located west of the town and at a distance between 4 and 5 km of it. The zone is an example of a lagoon system on sands with a landscape defined by pine resin, which covers a wide area of the area presenting large areas uncovered. The wetlands of Cantalejo are of great importance both in terms of the regulation and recharge of aquifers and in the maintenance of a varied community of plants and animals. They are considered as Places of Community Interest LIC and ZEPA
There are a total of twenty-two lagoons plus some others missing.
Traditionally, the lagoons have been used as cattle troughs, for tench farming, irrigation and in some cases for the extraction of peat.
Sickles of the San Juan River
In addition to the beautiful routes offered by the aforementioned lagoon system, we can mention the singularity of the enclave of the Hoces del Río San Juan. The San Juan River has its source in Prádena, its course goes through the surface and, it is hidden under the ground between caves galleries to re-emerge. As the Duraton River approaches, it becomes deeper, this being the chosen area. The walls are adorned with cavities in which griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, owls, etc ... nest. The transparency of its waters allows us to observe the bubbling of the water making us see the springs that spring from the bowels of the rock, whose show is worth seeing .
Due to its strategic location and easy access, the city of Cantalejo stands as the main focus of tourist activities. In recent years, Cantalejo has begun to consolidate as the main tourist center given its wealth in natural environments (these areas are declared as LIC and ZEPA) and also offering services to visitors as they have been: camping, hotels, restaurants, swimming pools, sports facilities and a wide variety of establishments.
