El Espinar

The municipality of El Espinar is configured along an extensive valley located on the northern slope of the Sierra de Guadarrama, in the transition between the Central System and the Castilian Plateau.

The origin of El Espinar dates back to the time of Roman colonization, with remains of mills, bridges and stretches of road, however, takes its first legal rights and title of Villa in 1297 with its Carta Puebla and its period of greatest boom during the s. XVI and XVII closely linked to La Mesta. The municipality is now part of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park and the Biosphere Reserve

Attractions

Church of San Eutropio

Church built in granite Herrerian style of s. XVI, has a twill, masterpiece of Sánchez Coello. The altarpiece, executed by Francisco Giralte, is considered the best in the province, as well as its baroque organ made of pine wood.

Tower of the Stork

Remains of the old sawmill built in 1901. Its end is always crowned by a nest of storks, "bird consort" of the municipality of the Station of El Espinar.

Hermitage of Stmo. Cristo del Caloco

Raised on the remains of the first Romanesque buildings of the s. XI and XII. Ctra. N-VI, Km. 68.

Hermitage of San Juan Bautista

Located in the current cemetery; only the apse of the primitive church, of Gothic traces and s. XIII to XIV.

Hermitage of the Virgen de la Soledad

Of Gothic style, it conserves an extraordinary coffered ceiling as well as several wood carvings. Ruins of the Convent of Santa Isabel Built near the church of San Eutropio in the s. XVI, today only the ruins of a Mudejar architectural ensemble and the Baroque church that housed inside.

Hermitage of the Virgen del Carmen

In the town of San Rafael, built in 1916, it is a "coquette" hermitage located in an enclave of great scenic beauty.

Ruins of the Palace of the Marqués de Perales

Old building that reflects the importance of the shearing of Merino sheep in the s. XVII and XVIII and the transumancia in these lands. Nowadays, its magnificent noble shields are preserved. Excellent group of villas and hotels From the end of the s. XIX and early s. XX, built by the first residents of the municipality, are the best proof of the "summer" splendor of the town of San Rafael.

As part of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park and the Biosphere Reserve, the municipality has many roads, trails, routes or roads that can be reported in the tourism office or on the municipal website.

The municipality of El Espinar has become a perfect setting for films, advertisements, short films and series. Its proximity to Madrid and its breathtaking landscapes make its forests the best set for any film. Films like Marcelino Pan y Vino, Bicycles are for summer or the Oscar-winning Laberinto del Fauno, or series like Under Suspicion, Vis a Vis or Luna, the mystery of Calenda, have been shot for the enjoyment of everyone in their pine forests.

Gastronomy
