The Celts settled in these places with their transhumant cabins, hence the difficulty in finding forts.
It is true that the Sierra de Arcones owes its name to these people of our peninsula. The Celts left the following legends and customs in Arcones:
- The legend of the treasure with its golden bull and the snake in La Lastra, today crowned this land with the chapel dedicated to the Patron of the town.
- The custom, with its legend, of the winter solstice log, which still lingers in some of the houses that have not been rehabilitated.
- The yew trees far from the town, in the meadow and in the mountains.
- The legend of the fountain of Los Rojos.
The Romans, brought their poplars, along the banks of the streams and the structure of the Roman fountains of the neighborhoods, with the trace of all the vessels and pitchers that have extracted water to drink and use culinary.
Arcones in its origin was the limit between the Christian and Muslim peoples, lately it is being considered that aróns, sword of the templars, due to the amount of remains that prove the stay of said in this municipality.
In the s. XII and XIII, were the Hospital Templars of the Order of San Juan, also leaving their solidarity, perhaps inherited from the previous inhabitants of Arcones such as: When a cow dies, each neighbor buys what he can afford, to throw it, but In this way the loss of the cow to the owner is not so painful.
Each house has not only be found at the time of the death of a member of the same, there is the brotherhood. The moments of threshing and gathering of the harvest are always done in solidarity, helping more than the least.
The women would carry the weight of the house and work the field, while the men, transhumant are in Valle de Alcudia or in Extremadura. The matriarchy existing for so many centuries, is still reflected in the current era in the customs and life of the people.
In the s. XIX and XX came to have 2800 inhabitants, being the most populated of the Community of Villa and Tierra de Pedraza, which belongs to the time of La Mesta. It was from before that time one of the largest producers of merino wool, being this village of transhumant shepherds until the middle of s. XX.
What to see
The roofs of the houses are typically of the sierra, of mud and boards, heavy to withstand the excess of snow. The walls of the houses are made of mud and stone, the walls of mud and straw. The floors were mud, where the animals passed to the block, behind the portal.
Church of San Miguel
Of stone also, it is the main monument of Arcones, the parochial church of San Miguel. It is a Romanesque temple of the thirteenth century, the oldest in the Sierra Segovia, which preserves the head of a triple semicircular apse, the one on the side of the Epistle occupied by the temple tower and a baptismal font from this time. But the church of San Miguel keeps the surprise of a fourth apse, an anomaly that is explained because it served as a closing chapel to the atrium. It has, therefore, a complex head in whose apse there is a window flanked by two columns topped with capitals with plant motifs. Inside it we can admire several altarpieces and a baptismal font also Romanesque.
The hermitage of San Roque
It is located to the south of the town, next to the cemetery. Its plant is square and its masonry walls, except for the corners that are formed by chains of ashlars. Its access door is oriented to the south and is characterized by being lintelled and refurbished with ashlars.
The hermitage of the Virgin of La Lastra
It is a simple construction of the s. XVIII that is located in the area known as La Lastra. It is believed that in this place there could be a population, since various settlement remains have been found. In its interior the patron Gothic image of the place is received.
You can also enjoy caves, such as La Tejera; that of San Frutos, in which it is believed that the saint was protected when he was persecuted; as well as that of Longaniza or Pepón, crossed by a river that adds danger to the visit of this cavity by the flow that can take depending on the time of year.
