Industrial heritage

The banners and banners hanging from the balconies of historic buildings, the straw-covered streets where small craft stalls are installed and most of the citizens dressed in costumes of the time, allow to recover during a weekend the taste of the pure tradition of past historical epochs, especially the Middle Ages. These are the images that the traveler can see in many towns and cities of Segovia during the spring and summer. But this walk through quiet cobbled streets in which we recognize houses emblazoned and small Romanesque churches next to buildings of popular invoice, will be pleasantly altered by the appearance on the urban stage of groups of musicians who invite you to follow the course in a cheerful courtship or characters that perform juggling exercises, acrobats and tightrope walkers that attract the attention of the public to the nerve center of the party: the Plaza. In the center is the falconer, who will let fly his hawks and the snake charmer.

In this forum will also be placed craftsmen and workshops, such as the glass blower, the stonemason, the blacksmith, the weaver or the spinner, among others. Perfectly dressed, they will work their raw materials to show visitors the final product. The medieval streets of each village, will be the enclave for the rest of artisans who will sell handmade products such as candies, medicinal herbs, perfumes, wood products and leather. The artisans of games and puppets will walk the streets with their performances. In many of these places the medieval market is completed with night performances in which the show and the fire combine to delight the public.

The province of Segovia has a rich and varied Industrial Heritage consisting of machines, buildings and buildings that once housed and formed part of the industry and that have survived to this day. Examples are mills, pile drivers, resin factories, sawmills, lime kilns, shears, shears ...

The autarky of the past made grow a daily and diverse industry that covered the needs of the area. As a consequence of the delay in the implementation of the Industrial Revolution in the province and the utility and profitability of these forms of production (some of which have been in operation until the 1970s), we can now count on a wide range of examples, some of which are truly singular and emblematic in the lands of Segovia and in the whole of the national territory, such as the Mint of Segovia, the Glass Factory of La Granja, the Martinete de Navafría, the Real Aserrío Mecánico de Valsaín and the Shearing of Cabanillas del Monte.

The route in question is designed considering the singularity and the good state of preservation of the proposed elements that are physically linked by the line that runs along the side of the mountain, largely parallel or confluent with the Cañada Real. It can be done by car but it is advisable to do (at least) one of its sections on foot or by bicycle. In any case you can enjoy the landscape and contemplation of the many species of birds in the area: storks, kites, vultures ... It is therefore useful to bring binoculars.

It begins in Valsaín, in the Real Aserrío Mecánico, continues with the Royal Glass Factory of La Granja de San Ildefonso, then continues until the Shear of Cabanillas del Monte and ends with the Martinete de la Casición de Cobre de Navafría.
